Overview

This walkthrough shows you how to turn on Profit optimization for your Google Ads integration in Sonar Optimize. Once enabled, Google's Smart Bidding optimizes toward purchases that clear a minimum profit threshold instead of purchases or revenue alone. You'll need Cost Settings configured before you start.

How it works

Triple Whale calculates profit per order from your Cost Settings data:

Revenue - Product cost (COGS) = Profit (margin)

Example:

Product selling price

$30

Product cost (COGS)

$10

Profit (margin)

$20

You set a profit-based rule, for example Margin > $19. Any purchase whose calculated profit clears that threshold fires the conversion event to Google. Google's Smart Bidding then optimizes your campaign toward customers who generate at least that level of profit, instead of optimizing for purchases or revenue alone.

This matters most if you have variable margins across products or orders (bundles, sale items, wholesale vs. retail pricing), or if you've noticed strong ROAS alongside flat or shrinking Net Profit, a sign Google is winning cheap, thin-margin conversions.

Before you begin

  • Complete Cost Settings. Every active product needs a cost of goods value (or coverage through shipping, gateway, or custom expense costs). If cost data is incomplete, the Profit optimization toggle stays disabled.

  • Confirm Enhanced Conversions is configured correctly in Google Ads.

⚠️ Warning: If Enhanced Conversions isn't configured correctly, some conversion data can be rejected without a clear failure state in Sonar Optimize. Confirm Enhanced Conversions status in Google Ads before you enable Profit optimization.

Steps

  1. Confirm Cost Settings are complete and Enhanced Conversions is configured (see Before you begin).

  2. In Google Ads, go to GoalsSummary.

  3. Under Other events, find the profit-margin conversion action Sonar created.

  4. Click the conversion action. A dialog opens in Google Ads.

  5. Click Create custom goal.

  6. Set the goal's conversion category to Sales, then save.

    1. This sets the profit-margin conversion action as a goal, so Smart Bidding optimizes toward it.

Verify / Expected result

After saving, the profit-margin conversion action should move from Other events to the Sales goal category in Google Ads' Goals → Summary view.
