Short answer

Yes. Connect the native ChatGPT Ads integration and apply Triple Whale UTMs. They serve different purposes, so you need both.

How the integration and UTMs work together

The native integration is a direct API connection that pulls platform-reported ChatGPT Ads performance metrics into Triple Whale. These include spend, impressions, clicks, conversions, revenue, and efficiency metrics.

UTMs identify the ChatGPT Ads traffic reaching your website. They allow Triple Whale to attribute sessions, orders, and revenue within the Pixel and customer journey.

Using both gives you:

  • ChatGPT Ads platform reporting from the native integration

  • Triple Whale attribution from your UTMs

ChatGPT Ads platform-reported conversions and revenue may differ from the conversions and revenue attributed by the Triple Whale Pixel.

What UTM parameters do I need on my ChatGPT Ads?

The recommended way to set up tracking for ChatGPT Ads is to use Fix All UTMs on the Triple Whale Tracking Settings page. This tool applies the correct campaign, ad group, and ad IDs to each ad automatically.

The Triple Whale tracking structure is:

?tw_source=chatgpt&tw_campaign={{CAMPAIGN_ID}}&tw_adsetid={{AD_GROUP_ID}}&tw_adid={{AD_ID}}

Do not paste this placeholder template directly into ChatGPT Ads. Use Fix All UTMs in Triple Whale so the placeholders are replaced with the correct IDs for each ad.

The parameters identify the following information:

  • tw_source=chatgpt identifies the traffic as coming from ChatGPT Ads.

  • tw_campaign identifies the ChatGPT Ads campaign.

  • tw_adsetid identifies the ChatGPT Ads ad group.

  • tw_adid identifies the individual ad.

In Triple Whale, the ChatGPT Ads ad group ID is stored in the tw_adsetid parameter so performance can be organized at the corresponding ad set level.

ChatGPT Ads may not resolve dynamic parameters consistently across every placement. For this reason, use Fix All UTMs instead of configuring the parameters manually.

Apply UTMs to your ChatGPT Ads

  1. Log into Triple Whale

  2. Go to Settings > Tracking Settings

  3. Find your ChatGPT Ads connection

  4. Click Fix All UTMs

Triple Whale will read your campaign hierarchy and apply the correct tracking parameters to your ads.

What happens if I connect the integration without applying UTMs?

The native integration can still pull platform-reported ChatGPT Ads performance data, such as spend, impressions, clicks, conversions, and revenue.

However, without the correct Triple Whale UTMs, Triple Whale may not be able to associate website sessions, orders, and revenue with the correct ChatGPT Ads campaign, ad group, or ad in the Pixel and customer journey.

For the most complete reporting, connect the native integration and use Fix All UTMs.
