TLDR
Shopify metafields let you store custom data on your customers, orders, and products, things like a customer's age, a product's material, or an order's PO number. Triple Whale lets you import selected Shopify metafields and map them to new columns, so that data becomes queryable in your Triple Whale SQL tables and answerable by Moby.
Overview
With Shopify metafields import, you select the specific metafields you want, for any of Customers, Orders, or Products, and Triple Whale maps each one to its own named column. This works consistently across all three asset types. Once imported, this data becomes available in your SQL tables and can be used by Moby to answer questions that combine your custom Shopify data with the rest of your Triple Whale data.
This is useful when you're tracking information Shopify doesn't natively report on but that matters for your analysis, for example, customer demographics, product specs, or order-level fields like a PO number or ACH payment link.
Key terms
Metafield: A custom field on a Shopify customer, order, or product that stores data outside Shopify's standard fields. Metafields can hold different data types, including text, URLs, JSON, and file or product references.
Column: The Triple Whale field you assign a metafield to when importing it. Each metafield becomes a new column.
Custom title: A mandatory display name for a metafield's column so it appears the way you want in Triple Whale (for example, a url metafield mapped to a column called yt_url). Custom titles can only be edited one time.
When to use it
This is a good fit when you need customer, order, or product attributes that Shopify tracks but Triple Whale doesn't report on out of the box, and you want that data joinable with your existing sales and attribution data. It's not a general-purpose Shopify metafield browser. You choose specific metafields ahead of time, and you can select up to 10 metafields per asset type (Customers, Orders, and Products).
